Vive la Gastronomie 21st Edition: An Ode to Jonnie Boer

This year’s Vive la Gastronomie was more than a culinary celebration — it was a heartfelt tribute to Jonnie Boer, one of the world’s most visionary chefs.

Over three unforgettable evenings, from July 30 to August 3, renowned chefs from De Librije, Inter Scaldes, Zarzo, Brass Boer (Curacao & Bonaire), and Baoase Luxury Resort in Curaçao came together in Curaçao and Bonaire to honor Jonnie’s legacy. Each crafted an exceptional six-course menu inspired by his most cherished dishes — a tribute not just in flavor, but in spirit, reflecting the creativity, passion, and craftsmanship Jonnie brought to every plate.

A Legacy Served with Love

The evenings unfolded at Brass Boer Curaçao, Baoase Luxury Resort, and Brass Boer Bonaire. Every course carried a story — memories from time spent with Jonnie, dishes once created together, and flavors that spoke of friendship and respect. Each participating chef had worked at De Librije, bringing with them not only their skills but also a piece of Jonnie’s culinary soul.

Where It All Began

Every story begins with a dream. For Baoase, it began with a single stone placed by Bibi, guided by a vision that would transform a stretch of untouched coastline into one of the Caribbean’s most intimate and celebrated escapes. Side by side, Ad and Bibi laid the foundation — quite literally — rock by rock, shaping the lagoon, planting the first trees, and crafting what would become the heart of Baoase’s tropical sanctuary.

By December 2009, their dream had taken physical form: a collection of five family oceanfront villas and the now-iconic Master Villa, nestled between lush gardens and the Caribbean Sea. It was the start of something extraordinary. A resort born not from ambition alone, but from love, patience, and unwavering belief.

Ad’s mission was clear from the beginning: “I want to build the most beautiful resort in the Caribbean.” And he meant every word. Sitting atop a crane, watching the rocks settle into the sea, not only building a shoreline but falling in love with what Baoase could become.

Every detail, from the handpicked Balinese antiques to the Banyan tree that still stands strong today, was chosen with intention. Bibi Island, named in honor of the woman who helped bring the vision to life, remains a tranquil symbol of their legacy.
