Family Holiday at Curaçao

Going on a Family Holiday in Curaçao? Try These 4 Amazing Experiences

After almost a decade, United Airlines recently announced the return of weekly direct flights to Curaçao out of Newark, New Jersey beginning December 7. The tourism industry in Curaçao is growing rapidly, and with the onset of two major hotel projects that have a strong international tourist appeal, the popularity of this beautiful island continues to grow. Curaçao is turning out to be a hidden gem of a destination especially for families, thanks to a combination of the island’s sheer beauty and year-round friendly weather. To get the most out of your Curaçao trip, here are four of the best activities to try.

Take a Tuk Tuk tour of the island
If you are looking for a great first-day activity to familiarise yourself with Curaçao, a Tuk Tuk tour is it. A Tuk Tuk is a three-wheeled motorised vehicle that is commonly used as a taxi. What makes Tuk Tuks perfect for touring Curaçao is that they are cheap, slow, and unlike normal taxis and buses, which makes you feel like you are closer to the sites and environment. Plus, they are great for parents who want to tour every part of the island without spending too much.

Generally speaking, Tuk Tuks can comfortably seat five people but if you are travelling with a baby, you will need to bring the required car seat. Keep in mind that some Tuk Tuk drivers may not allow babies that are too young. Most Tuk Tuk drivers in Curaçao are multilingual and can teach you and your kids a lot about the history and culture of the island. If your kids are hungry, they can also take you to some of the best spots to eat, shop, and explore as a family. While taking your tour, make sure you pass by the Sharloo Abou neighbourhood, where you can see multiple colourful murals on building walls.

Swim with sea turtles in Klein Curaçao
Klein (Little) Curaçao is a tiny satellite island located almost two hours away from Curaçao by boat. The beautiful uninhabited island is loved for its turquoise blue waters, powder-white beaches, and sea turtles that swim in 10ft water and are not shy. While there, your kids can swim alongside the sea turtles and observe their graceful movements in real-time. The sea turtles range from small hawksbill turtles to the larger loggerhead turtles. Swimming with turtles is one of the most magical experiences your kids will ever have. It gives them a chance to come into close contact and observe the habits of the endangered turtles. As your kids swim with the turtles, you can head over to the beach to get a perfect tan.

Take a guided paddleboarding tour along the Spanish water mangroves
Stand up paddling is a great way to explore the waters while taking in the beautiful sights in Curaçao. A paddleboarding paradise, Curaçao boasts beautiful waters, pristine reefs, and a great climate throughout the year. The Spanish water mangroves, in particular, are a nursery for many bird species and sea life that you and your kids can marvel at as you paddle. Paddleboarding is a great activity for you and your kids as it is fun and takes just a few minutes to master, even for the kids.

Hike at Christoffel National Park
If you are looking for a place to burn off some energy, a trip to Curaçao’s largest national park will definitely get your heart pumping. Located inside the park is Christoffel Mountain which has eight hiking trails that allow you to get a taste of Curaçaoan outdoors. The trails vary in difficulty and are all available for exploration with or without a guide. You and your kids will enjoy the rich variety of flora and fauna, as well as the picturesque views surrounding you. If you get there before 10 am, you can go up the 372 metre-high mountain, which is an experience your kids will never forget.

Curaçao is the place to be if you are looking for a family holiday destination that is full of life and exciting activities for the whole family. The island’s beauty, culture, and history will leave you with memories that will last forever.
