our perfect anniversary getaway

February 27th, 2017
Quote: “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” — IT technicians worldwide

Curaçao is a Dutch Caribbean island just off the northern coast of Venezuela which is one of Caribbean’s best kept secrets. Known for its beautiful sandy beaches, picturesque coves and colorful coral reefs that teem with marine life, it is a sister island of Aruba (a popular Caribbean destination of its own) and Bonaire. Together, the three islands are often referred to as the ABC islands.

With the past year being so busy for us, we were looking to celebrate our 16th wedding anniversary in a special way. Not only were we looking for a romantic setting but we wanted something secluded so that we could really unwind and be able to focus on one another. We also wanted something tropical where we could be guaranteed little rain and lots of sunshine.

Curacao was our chosen anniversary destination and our choice for accommodations was the Baoase Luxury Resort. The Baoase Luxury Resort offered perfection. It was a place that was calm and peaceful. It offered everything you could want for a romantic luxurious getaway.

Vacations are all about tossing the budget to the breeze and living the holiday dream. Although only a few of us are rolling in dough, a top-shelf week away from home is worth every penny. From exclusive enclaves with butlers and breakfast chefs to resorts with caviar and champagne bars, pull out all the stops and indulge in the best money can buy. After all, it’s your vacation and you’re worth it.

A fabulous day starts with breakfast on the beach, dip in the Caribbean Sea, lunch under a shady cabana and back to the beach for a nap. Barefoot elegance at the most exclusive resort on the island, Baoase Curacao fronts a wide swath of beach between Willemstad, the capital city and the Curacao Sea Aquarium. Artistically designed with little statues of Buddha, no detail is overlooked like water trays at the villa entrances to wash sandy feet and open-air bathrooms with stone tubs that are perched on hardwood floors. Rates for the priciest villa simply called Superior Beachfront Pool Suite start at USD$1,090 per night (USD$1,400 during the December holidays) and comes with a private pool, statuesque four-poster bed and that artsy bathroom with the outside rain shower and tub. Add-ons well worth the cost include couples massages, lessons in Pilates and a personal trainer.

Baoase Luxury Resort in Curaçao is a great fit for LGBT guests and all seasoned Caribbean travelers looking for an island where everything is accepted and celebrated.

Even though the Ocean Front Villa is the most requested accommodation here, we were told families cannot go wrong in booking the Private Pool Suite, the Superior Private Pool Suiteand the Master Villa (the only one with butler service).

Note: The resort doesn’t have a spa. However, VIPs can request treatments ranging from traditional massages and body scrubs to manicures and pedicures on the property’s private beach. In-room group treatments are available for wedding parties. Tip: Guests are advised to book spa treatments at least two days in advance. To make such arrangements, reach out to Jacqueline Held (, sales and marketing manager.

Baoase Villa can handle a multitude of special requests and couples can buy it out for a wedding.

The resort’s Baoase Culinary Beach Restaurant is open to locals. The most popular fare here is “The Chef’s Menu,” a full seven-course menu, which changes constantly and makes use of fresh ingredients. Additional recommended dishes include tuna tartare, lionfish and ginger cheesecake. Nice Touch: All of the seating at this restaurant is beachfront. Although it is fairly easy to get a reservation at the resort, we were told guests should book two weeks in advance to be on the safe side.

For VIPs tying the knot, the resort can do everything from buyouts to ceremonies for 10 guests and rehearsal dinners. The property can accommodate almost any over-the-top request. For instance, A-listers can hire a private jet to drop rose petals during the ceremony.

Other extravagant needs that the resort has fulfilled in the past include delivering 100 flowers to a couple’s room during their honeymoon, and flying in wagyu beef from Japan to meet a client’s request for dinner.

Additional experiences include a bottle of champagne upon arrival; a four-course “Surprise Menu” created by the chef in a romantic gazebo set up on the beach; and private picnic on the beach.

Luxury travel advisors looking to further customize a wedding party’s vacation should reach out to Jesse Vandervalk (, or Ana Henriquez (, the wedding coordinators.

The local airport, Curaçao International, is about a 25-minute drive from the resort, which also has a helipad.

Hint: Guests can opt for a VIP transfer, and a chauffeur will pick them up inside Curaçao International Airport, allow them to pass through customs and immigration more quickly, bypassing the lines, and then take them to the property in a luxury car. Note: There is a private jet center at the Curaçao International airport.

Tip: For those VIPs looking to get some shopping done, there are some high-end jewelry shops in Punda, which is roughly a five- to 10-minute drive from the resort. The property can provide VIP transport to and from the shops.

Baoase is the only five-star hotel in Curaçao and recently became a member of Virtuoso.

Advisors looking to further customize a VIP’s vacation should reach out to Guest Relations (
